Dedicatees and Dates of First Meeting

This page gives in alphabetical order the names of the dedicatees of Sorabji’s musical works with the date on which a first meeting or a first exchange of letters (whoever the first writer may be) took place, given in as complete a form as possible. The dates are mostly conjectural. In addition to providing data on the date of first acquaintance, the page shows in a different light the information on the number of works dedicated to each person. An alphabetical list of dedicatees ordered by number of dedications will be found on another page.

Dates of first meeting are given in the year-month-day format, often followed by “ATL” (at the latest), which is unfortunately all that is known in many cases. Dates in italics are derived from the date of completion of a dedicated work; they are followed by a bullet (•) when the letter was to Sorabji, and by a pilcrow (¶) when it was from him. An em dash (—) indicates that the date is unknown.
