Durations of Recorded Performances of Opus clavicembalisticum

This page compares the duration of each section of Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji's Opus clavicembalisticum (1929-30; 253 pp.) in four recorded performances:

  • Geoffrey Douglas Madge, Royal Conservatory Series RCS 4-800, recorded live on 11 June 1982 at Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, Utrecht; released 1983.
  • Geoffrey Douglas Madge, BIS-CD-1062/1064, recorded live on 24 April 1983 at Mandel Hall, Chicago; released 1999.
  • John Ogdon, Altarus AIR-CD-9075 (4), recorded 8-12 July, 8-15 November 1985, 10-15 March 1986; released 1989.
  • Daan Vandewalle, Passacaille Plus PAS 9703; released in digital form on 19 January 2024 and as a 5-CD set on 1 February 2024.

The durations for Ogdon 1986, obtained using the open source CD digital audio extractor CDex, have been rounded to eliminate the hundredths of a second not available for Madge 1982 (released as an LP). The list of durations for Ogdon’s recording (and of its 2004 reissue) also includes those for all the Sorabji recordings produced by Altarus Records.

Jonathan Powell’s performance at Merkin Hall, New York (20 June 2004), lasted 4 hours 11 minutes 21 seconds.
