Timings of Recorded Performances of Opus clavicembalisticum

This page compares the timings for the individual sections of Opus clavicembalisticum (1929-30; 253 pp.) in three recorded performances:

  • Geoffrey Douglas Madge, Royal Conservatory Series RCS 4-800, rec. live on 11 June 1982 at Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, Utrecht; released 1983
  • Geoffrey Douglas Madge, BIS-CD-1062/1064, rec. live on 24 April 1983 at Mandel Hall, Chicago; released 1999
  • John Ogdon, Altarus AIR-CD-9075 (4), rec. 8-12 July, 8-15 November 1985, 10-15 March 1986; released 1989

The complete durations of the recorded performances are as follows:

  • Madge 1982: 3 hours 50 minutes 16 seconds
  • Madge 1983: 3 hours 53 minutes 38 seconds
  • Ogdon 1986: 4 hours 43 minutes 29 seconds (i.e., 23.1% longer than Madge 1982)

The timings for Ogdon 1986, obtained using the open source CD digital audio extractor CDex, have been rounded to eliminate the hundredths of seconds not available for Madge 1982 (issued as an LP). The list giving timings for Ogdon’s recording (and of its 2004 reissue) also gives those of all the Sorabji recordings produced by Altarus Records. Jonathan Powell’s performance at Merkin Hall, New York (20 June 2004), lasted 4 hours 11 minutes 21 seconds.
